Guido Van Damme

Remembering Guido

Just two days ago, peacefully in his sleep, our Belgian brother, the journalist Guido Van Damme was called back to be with God. His French wife Bénédicte – like Guido, a lay Dominican – was with him.

Many of us were blessed by knowing this wonderful couple, enriched by Guido’s wisdom and unfailing tenderness, enthralled by his stories of friendships – not least, with a Muslim encountered at a Brussels café. Guido had the openness and warmth of a true Dominican; he was a gentle man, and a gentleman, highly intelligent, shrewd, an astute judge of character, deeply and sincerely faithful to the Church and the Order. He and Bénédicte welcomed many lay Dominicans to their home and both worked tirelessly for the Belgian Dominican laity. How we shall miss him!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bénédicte at this time of separation. We can be confident that Guido will be with her and with all his family as they adjust to life without him; and we know with absolute certainty that he is with the Lord he loved and served so faithfully.

May he rest in peace until we meet again!

  1. Thank you for writing these words regarding our dearest friend Guido. All the things you say are so true.
Upon hearing that I was flying into Brussells to stay a few days and then continue you onto Lille, France to stay at our Dominican Priory whikst searching my family History, Guido and Benedicte, after making enquiries regarding a Dominican Church in the area, decided to invute me to stay with them in their home. What a joy that was. In fact I was enjoying myself so much that, had I not already waited years to go to Lille, I don’t think that I would have left the most beautiful couple one could wish to meet. What true Dominicans with that warm hospitality that I realuse they have shown to so many. We know where Guido is and we hope and pray that the ache in Benedicte’s heart is helped by knowing that so many of us have loved and appreciated who you are, i.e. true desciples of our Lord.

  2. Very moved by the message of Guido’s passing away, I remember all the precious moments of common meetings in favour of promoting a spiritual network via the modern media among the Lay Dominicans in Europe from 2007 – 2013 . Guido gave his heart-blood with his creativity and engagment, together with his beloved wife Bénédicte. May he now enjoy the eternal light of God’s presence in the communion of our Dominican Saints and Blessed – including all the un-canonised ones! He and Bénédicte will keep in my prayers.
